Yesterday my sister and I went to the beach…only to leave an hour or so later.  It was pretty much unbearable sitting there because it was so windy and the sand was whipping all over us.  Not a nice beach day.  But I did get a little bit of reading done in The Time Traveler’s Wife…which is great so far.  I definitely recommend picking it up to read before the movie comes out in the middle of August!!!!  Seems like I’m going to like it.

After our mini-beach adventure, we actually met up with our co-workers on our day off to play some Rummy 500–yeah, we are losers.  I am actually getting addicted to that game…you have to be very strategic! haha.

Last night, my sister and I finally made our return to Bikram Yoga.  It’s been about a week or so…far too long.  I just love it.  For those of you who don’t know, Bikram Yoga is a 90-minute class that consists of 26 postures.  It is practiced in about 105 degree heat.  It is also very scripted.  If you’re interested, you can check out more information about it on the Bikram Website.  I just love it.

After yoga, we came home & showered since we were DRENCHED in sweat.  We then decided on heating up our leftovers from the night before for an easy & delicious dinner.  You can’t go wrong with pasta, broccoli, chicken, spinach, parmesan cheese and red sauce.

After dinner, we went to the movies and saw The Ugly Truth.  I didn’t know much about this movie before we went, but Tina wanted to see it, so I went.  It was actually really good!!  I was surprised.  I would say that it is more of a chick flick…but I would recommend going to see it!  We got some bulk candy to enjoy throughout the movie…mmm.

This morning, I enjoyed Overnight Oats for the second time.  Boy, oh boy.  I think I am in love.  Why did I wait so long to try this?!?!

Last night I mixed together 1/2 cups oats, 1/4 cup Vanilla Chobani Yogurt, 1/2 cup skim milk, & a handful of raisins.  Placed it in the fridge overnight.  This morning I added a chopped banana, cinnamon, and a tablespoon of ground flax seed.  Talk about DELICIOUS!

No run scheduled for today.  Today was cross-training day.  I went to my sister’s Spinning Class.  I thought that this was her best class yet.  She did a great job and everyone seemed to love it!  It was a great workout and a fun time!

We are about to ride our bikes over to the farmer’s market to check out the fresh fruit and veggies.  We were thinking of black bean burgers tonight that I have frozen from the last time I made them.  Maybe we can find something to have with it.

Other than that, I’ll have to see if it is too windy for the beach today.  If the wind is under control, I’m sure I’ll be hitting up the beach and getting some reading done!

Hasta Luego!!

Good Morning!

I can’t believe it is already Wednesday morning!

Last night my sister and I went out to dinner with my Grandmom.  I forgot my camera at home, so I wasn’t able to take any pictures.  However, my sister did bring hers & we ordered the same thing, so you can shoot over to her blog for pics!

The restaurant we went to serves the BEST pizza bread ever.  I had about 3 pieces of it.  So awesome.  For my entree I ordered whole wheat fettucini with broccoli, spinach, & grilled chicken in marinara sauce. This was SO good.  They definitely weren’t shy with the broccoli, spinach, & chicken.  They also weren’t shy with the portion size.  They gave us SO MUCH food.  I usually never leave food on my plate but last night was an exception.  My stomach could not fit anymore food in it.  I absolutely loved it though.

Today I am off of work.  This morning I was laying in bed and was woken up by thunder, rain, and wind at about 6:30ish.  I wanted to stay in bed though, so I slept till about 8ish.  When I got up, the thunder and rain was over and it was hot, HUMID, and sunny.  So I snacked on some grapes and watermelon and headed out on my scheduled 5-miler.  I decided that I wanted to run at a comfortable pace today and planned to hit an 8:00/mile pace.  I ended up averaging a 7:53/mile pace.  So it wasn’t too off.  I felt good running at this pace, I was enjoying myself and running.  I’m really glad I didn’t try to push it and run faster.  My body & mind needed it.  Plus the humidity was horrible.

I came home showered and made myself a GREEN MONSTER!

weee…haha it has been a while!  Very, very delicious.  I had about 1 and 1/2 glasses of this splendid drink!

Now I am just updating my blog munching on grapes and sippin’ some Green Tea.  I believe I will be beachin’ it up today with my sis.  I will get some reading in on The Time Traveler’s Wife….it’s gettin’ good and I haven’t been able to read much lately!

Bikram Yoga tonight!!! It has been about a week and a 1/2 since I have been to Bikram, so I am real excited about that.  Not sure what else is in store for the day. Anyone have any suggestions for dinner tonight??

Oh yea, jump on over to Megan’s Blog for her Chobani Giveaway!!

In my previous post, I touched on the topic of warming up prior to running.  I mentioned that I NEVER warm up.  When I say never, I mean NEVER.  Not even before a race.  Am I doing the right thing?  Probably not.

I started to think about the importance of a warm-up after my 3 mile run the other morning.  I averaged a 7:16/mile pace.  I ran mile 1 at a 7:42/mile pace, mile 2 at 7:04/mile, & mile 3 at 7:03/mile.  Hm…I wonder, if I added a warm up, could I have ran my first mile faster?  Maybe.

I was interested in learning more about proper warmups, so I went to my trusty running website, Runner’s World, and found an article titled The Perfect Warmup.

According to this article, an adequate warmup should consist of at least 10 minutes of continuous activity in order for muscles to reach their optimum temperature.  I think the most important piece of information that I gathered from this article is that these guidelines for warmups should be followed before fast-paced workouts and races.  In other less intense runs, you can gradually increase your pace during the run, which will more or less serve as the warmup.

Warming up before a race or speed work may seem like a pain in the butt sometimes but it will prepare your body to work to it’s potential and hopefully (according to this article) make for a faster run.

Now I guess it’s time for me to stop being lazy and actually care about warming up.  Most of the time I probably won’t have to worry about warming up because I can just gradually increase my pace throughout the run and use my first couple of miles as my warmup.  However, when I do shorter training runs where I want to focus on speed, it probably would be beneficial to add a 10 minute warm up in there!  Additionally, I think, without question, that I need to start warming up before my races.  I always see most of the runners warming up beforehand, but I have always been too lazy to do so.  I always thought I would expend all of my energy before the race even began.  My next race coming up is a 10-miler on August 8th.  This is a run that I have done for the past 4 years.  This year will be a little different though.  I will be warming up. 🙂

After work yesterday, I went to yoga with my sister.  I hadn’t been in quite a number of days, so it was awesome to be back in the studio!  It was an excellent class and it felt wonderful.  After yoga, we made up a quick dinner by defrosting some Split Pea Soup and baking tortillas to make our own “tortilla chips”.

I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of this soup…so filling & yummy.  Unfortunately, we used up the last of our supply of it so I’m sure we will be making it again very soon!

After din, we went to the food store and filled up on tons of fruit, veggies, yogurt, peanut butter, & some other tasty things…aka the essentials!

Last night, I also got BANANA WHIP!  My favorite.  I topped mine with Reese Peanut Butter Cups, as always.  This was a great way to end the night…mmm, mmm.

I also prepped some overnight oats last night.  I have been saying over and over again about how I was going to try them out.  Well, ladys & gents, I finally did.  Last night I mixed together:

  • 1/4 cup Chobani Vanilla Yogurt
  • 1/2 cup skim milk
  • 1/2 cup raw oatmeal
  • few chopped dates

I then covered it and placed it in the fridge.

This morning, after my 3 mile run, I was able to enjoy it.  But first about my run!  The run was a short one but it felt pretty good.  I wanted to up the speed for this run and I ran it at a 7:16/mile pace.  I noticed that my splits for the last 2 miles were 7:04 & 7:03, respectively.  My split for the first mile was 7:42.  I was thinking of maybe adding a short warm-up to some of my runs since my first mile was significantly slower than my last 2 miles.  Do any of you incorporate warm-ups into your runs?

This is really interesting because I NEVER warm-up before a race and perhaps that could make a big difference…?  Thoughts?

Anyway, did I like the overnight oats?  YES!  I loved them!

When I took them out this morning, I added cinnamon and a chopped banana.  I meant to add flax seed but it completely slipped my mind.

They were so delicious…such a different taste than the oatmeal I am used to.  I enjoyed it very, very much.  If you have been contemplating making them, go for it!  You can’t go wrong.  Hey, if you end up not liking them…just throw them in the microwave and cook em’ up instead!  I’m looking forward to enjoying these again…perhaps tomorrow morning?!  So tasty & I was not sweating eating them!  They also filled me up and kept me full.  You can also play around with the ingredients that you use…there are endless possiblities.

Right now I’m just on a break from work & I’ll be eating lunch soon.  Not sure what I’ll be having quite yet, but right now I’m just snacking on some watermelon!

Tonight my sister, 3 cousins, & I are taking my grandmom out to eat at an italian restaurant.  I just love this restaurant and they make the BEST tomato bread ever.  We always end up eating TONS of eat and are stuffed before our meals even com out.  Looking forward to it! 🙂

Well, it has been quite a fun weekend.  I haven’t been able to update because my boyfriend, Todd, came up from Philly for the weekend!  I haven’t updated since Friday morning, so I will do a quick recap.

Friday night, my mom, sister, and I went 0ut to dinner on the Ocean City boardwalk to one of our favorites…Bashful Banana.  I ordered the Chicken Cacciatore wrap.  It came with a slice of watermelon & honeydew & a strawberry.  I also ordered steamed broccoli on the side.

Delicious.  That is one of my favorite wraps to order there.  Later that night, we rode our bikes to get ice cream.  I ordered a “collider” (equivalent of a Dairy Queen Blizzard) with Vanilla Frozen Yogurt, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, & Bananas.  I did not take a picture…but I’m sure you can imagine how awesome this was.  It was quite big and when I finished off mine, my sister and I split the remainder of my mom’s since she couldn’t finish about half of hers.  So good though!

Saturday morning, I set out on my first long run for Marathon Training.  This run was 8 miles & it has been quite some time since I have ran 8 miles.  I really enjoyed this run.  I ran a 7:43/mile pace.  I was sort of disappointed by my splits, because at this point last summer I was significantly faster.  I’m not really sure what to contribute that to, but I’m trying to continue to think positive because I know that I should be happy that I’m pretty easily able to complete an 8 mile run at a pace that I still consider to be good!  Really, it’s all about enjoyment…there’s no other reason I’m out there running!  🙂

One of my snacks on Saturday was a smoothie….

DSCN1197Very refreshing.  I blended together a frozen banana, flax seed, frozen strawberries, frozen mango, skim milk, & unsweetened vanilla almond milk.  I’m pretty sure that’s all that went into this yummy drink!

As I said earlier, Todd came down for the weekend.  Unfortunately I could not get off of work on Saturday, but it turned out to be okay because Todd just came outside and rode around on his bike with me while I wrote a couple of tickets…haha.  Then I just spent some time at home & watched T.V. and ate lunch with him.  So it turned out pretty good!

For lunch, we heated up some of the leftover Veggie Chili that I made a couple of nights ago.

Of course I whipped up some Guacamole to top the chili with…and to eat with tortilla chips…

I am seriously obsessed with Guacamole lately.  It is so flavorful & tasty!  Todd loved the chili so I’m sure I’ll be making that again sometime soon for him.

Saturday night, we went out to a restaurant that neither of us had ever been to, Sage.  It’s a small BYOB in the next town over.  It turned out to be excellent and I loved my meal.  I already can’t wait to go back.  Before dinner we stopped to pick up a bottle of wine.  I’m a big fan of red wine & I love Syrah.  So we bought a $17 bottle of Ravenswood Syrah.  It was very good and I would definitely buy it again.  I may or may not have drank too much wine at dinner!

They served two different types of bread that we snacked on throughout dinner…one was a white bread and the other was a type of wheat…both very good.  We started off with Eggplant Gallo with ricotta, romano, mozzarella, sauteed mushrooms, & marsala sauce.  I really did not know what to expect with this…but I was pleasantly surprised.

Sorry about the quality of the picture…it was difficult to get a good picture.  This was very good & I would definitely order this again.  The marsala gave the dish a unique sweet taste.  Thinking about this now makes me want it again!  Now our starter was great…but my entree was SUPERB!

DSCN1205Check that out.  Homemade Whole-Wheat Linguine with garlic, tomatoes, fresh basil, and jumbo lump crab meat.  This was…INCREDIBLE.  Look at those huge chunky tomatoes in there.  The basil gave the pasta such a fresh taste.  The garlic was sliced so I enjoyed nice big slices of garlic.  So much flavor going on in here…so awesome.  I basically licked that plate clean.  The pasta was so fresh…the restaurant actually has a market next door where they sell their homemade pastas…I need to start buying them more.  I asked for whole wheat pasta…but I’m not positive that I got it…who knows..maybe I did!

Overall, an awesome dining experience!  After dinner, we went over to the casino and played a little Blackjack.  We only stayed for a little bit and were smart and walked away while we were winning.  I only won a little bit…about $40…Todd won more…about $150.  So I would say that we made out pretty well!  After gambling for a little, we walked through all of the shops and I got myself a little bulk candy!  We had a really good night!

I was lucky enough to have off of work on Sunday, so I could spend the whole day with Todd.  We woke up pretty early and went on a nice bike ride to the end of Ocean City…I would say it is probably about 24 miles.  After our ride, we went out to breakfast at our favorite breakfast spot, Hannah G’s.  I got a huge bowl of oats topped with fruit & then had a big fruit bowl on the side.  Todd ordered french toast topped with fruit.  Everything was delish!

It was a beautiful day out so we spent the day at the beach.  The ocean was so warm so I went in for a little swim!

Last night, Todd, both of my sisters, my sister’s friend, Jason, and I made dinner.  We made a spinach salad with strawberries, candied walnuts, feta cheese all tossed in EVOO/Balsamic Vinegar/S &P.

That is definitely one of my favorite salads.  We also had baked sweet potatoes, corn on the cob, & grilled BBQ Chicken.

DSCN1207A piece of BBQ chicken is missing from this picture because it was in the process of being taken off of the grill!  haha.  I guess I was a little impatient.  I ended up having another sweet potato since Todd didn’t want his.  Everything was really good.

Later that night, we met my parents for dessert where they got dinner.  It was good to see my Dad since I have not really spent time with him in a week or so.  Christina and I split a delicious fruit plate and a plate of biscotti.  I also had a cup of green tea.  It was a great dessert & not too heavy! Delicious.

Well it has been quite a fun-filled weekend with lots of good eats.  Now it’s back to work.  This morning I made a bowl of oats.  Unfortunately my fruit bowl is very sad right now and needs to be replenished!

This bowl had oats, raisins, 1/2 banana (last one in the house so Christina and I split it), cinnamon, honey, flax, skim milk, a few sliced strawberries).

Today is a scheduled rest day for marathon training.  I need it to catch up on sleep!  My calves have been extraordinary sore lately, too.  I work until 4 today and then I think I am going to yoga at 5:30.  After yoga, I’ll have something for dinner & then go food shopping to stock up on some necessities like FRUIT!

Sorry for the LONG update!!! 🙂

Because of the rain yesterday, my day was pretty uneventful.  I hung around most of the day relaxing, eating, & watching friends.  I guess it’s nice to have a day like that every once in a while.  Part of my eats throughout the day included an egg sandwich with broccoli…

Before yoga, I stopped at the store to pick up a few veggies that we needed to make a Veggie Chili for dinner.  Speaking of yoga, it was excellent last night.  I just love the instructor on Thursday nights!  She’s the greatest.

After yoga, we came home and made our dinner.  We based the recipe off of Ina Garten’s Chicken Chili.  I have made that recipe a couple of times before and have enjoyed it very much; however, tonight we decided that we were not in the mood for chicken and we’d rather have beans in the chili.  So instead of the chicken, we subbed a 15 oz can of Red Kidney Beans and a 15 oz can of Chickpeas.  It came out veryyy tasty!  Good thing we have leftovers!

yum.  This chili was tasty and filling.  I topped it with Guacamole.  My favorite.

Delicious.  I ate this along with blue corn tortilla chips…another one of my new addictions.

A little bit after dinner, we decided to go out for Banana Whip, or as many of you bloggers know it “Banana Soft Serve”.  Last night I think they made it the best they ever did.  They layered the bottom of the cup with Reese Peanut Butter Cups, piled on LOADS and LOADS of banana whip, then topped it again with Reeses Cups!!!!!    Divine & Delicious.  Wish I took a picture!!

After banana whip, we came home and watched Yes, Man with Jim Carey.  It was an interesting idea for a movie…definitely a little weird, but it was entertaining to watch…it kept my attention.

This morning, I woke up and made my usual Fruity Oatmeal!

This bowl contained: Oats, Cherries, Blueberries, Peach, Raspberries, Strawberries, Banana, Milk, Ground Flax, Cinnamon, & Honey.  I don’t believe I left anything out!

Today is a rest day from running.  Tomorrow is my first long run.  The first run is 8 miles.  It’s been quite a while since I have ran 8 miles so it will be good to get back into the flow of things.  I plan to wake up very early to get it in before work.

I’m not too sure what the plans will be for today…if it is nice enough I will be going to the beach with my mom and sister…if not, I think we will go shopping!  Either way, it sounds like it will be good no matter what.

Where has the sun been?  Well, wherever it may be, it needs to come out and stop raining! 🙂

Yesterday afternoon, I did make my favorite snack…GUACAMOLE!!!  I enjoyed them along with baked blue corn tortilla chips.  Can anyone else not get enough of guac?

Last night was a fun time…my sister and I went over to my grandmom’s house and made her dinner!  As I said before, we made a delicious Pork Tenderloin, lima beans, and a spinach salad (chopped golden delicious apple, strawberries, feta cheese, & candied walnuts tossed in a mix of EVOO/balsamic vinegar/s & p).

Absolutely delicious. The pork came out excellent.  I highly recommend trying out the recipe!

For dessert, we had fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, & blackberries) with fresh whipped cream.

mmm…sometimes the most simple desserts are the most delicious…

We had a really great time with our grandmom.  We chatted for a while and it was nice!

This morning I woke up and was scheduled for 3 miles.  My sister and I both ran together today.  The weather wasn’t the greatest, but that’s okay!  I came in showered, folded some laundry and cooked up some oats!

Today’s concoction consisted of equal parts of oatmeal & oatbran, banana, peach, blueberries, cherries, skim milk, cinnamon, & honey.

I am now just sitting here updating the blog sipping on Green Tea and snacking on an apple & cinnamon.  My sister is teaching spinning right now…I decided to skip out on it this week.  My body is tired between running and yoga and I don’t see the purpose in overworking myself!

Not sure what I’ll be doing for the rest of the day…it doesn’t look like it will include being outside since it’s raining.  I have to do something though or I’ll go crazy.  haha.

Tonight I’m going to yoga and I’m real excited because one of my favorite instructors is teaching it.  Enjoy your day…I hope the sun is out where you are!
